The National Service Scheme encourages students to participate in activities that benefit society and the environment. Keeping this objective in mind, Phaltan Education Society’s College of Pharmacy & Research Center organized the Herbal Garden Cleaning NSS Activity during Academic Year 2025–26.

The programme was a regular NSS activity and was arranged on the occasion of World Pharmacists Day. Its primary objective was to clean and maintain the herbal garden while creating awareness about environmental conservation among students.

For pharmacy students, a herbal or botanical garden also provides an important learning environment where they can observe medicinal plants and understand their relevance to pharmaceutical and medicinal studies. The activity therefore combined environmental responsibility with practical educational exposure. Explore more PES College of Pharmacy Activities & Events.

Objectives of the Herbal Garden Cleaning Activity

The NSS Activity at PES College of Pharmacy Phaltan also encouraged students to understand how small environmental initiatives can make a meaningful contribution to campus sustainability

The main objective of the programme was to encourage students to understand their responsibility towards cleanliness, environmental protection and community service.

Through the NSS activity, volunteers were encouraged to actively participate in maintaining the college herbal garden rather than considering cleanliness only as an individual responsibility.

The activity aimed to:

  • Maintain cleanliness in the college herbal garden and its pathways.
  • Encourage environmental conservation among NSS volunteers.
  • Promote teamwork, leadership and social responsibility.
  • Help maintain healthy growth of herbal plants through cleaning, pruning and maintenance.
  • Create a clean and pleasant environment for learning.
  • Encourage students to participate in future community-service activities.

These objectives closely reflect the activity described in the official report, which highlights environmental conservation, teamwork, leadership and continued social responsibility.

Active Participation of NSS Volunteers

A total of 20 volunteers, including students and faculty members, participated in the programme. The participants worked together to clean different areas of the herbal garden.

Volunteers removed unwanted weeds and cleaned the pathways. Plants were trimmed where required, while herbal plants were pruned and trained to support healthy growth. Waste generated during cleaning was collected and properly disposed of so that the garden could remain clean and organized.

The activity demonstrated how collective effort can bring a visible improvement to a shared educational space.

Cleaning and Maintenance of the Herbal Garden

During the activity, NSS volunteers performed several practical cleaning and maintenance tasks.

Weeds were removed from the garden, pathways were cleaned, plants were trimmed, and waste material was collected. Volunteers also pruned and trained herbal plants to encourage healthy growth.

These activities significantly improved the overall appearance of the garden. According to the activity report, the cleaning work helped make the herbal garden a more peaceful and useful space for both relaxation and learning.

Regular maintenance is particularly important for an educational herbal garden because an organized environment makes it easier for students to observe plants and participate in practical learning activities.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

One of the important outcomes of the NSS activity was learning through direct participation.

Classroom teaching provides students with academic knowledge, while activities such as this allow them to develop practical and interpersonal skills. Working together to clean and maintain a shared space encourages communication, coordination, discipline and responsibility.

The official report specifically notes that volunteers developed teamwork and leadership skills, which are valuable for future community-service initiatives.

Such experiences can help pharmacy students appreciate that professional education is not limited to examinations and laboratory work. Participation in community-oriented activities can also contribute to their overall personal and professional development.

Herbal Garden as a Learning Resource for Pharmacy Students

A herbal garden can serve as a useful educational resource for pharmacy students because it provides direct exposure to plants and crude drugs relevant to pharmaceutical studies.

The activity was therefore not limited to cleaning. The second photograph included in the official report is captioned “Volunteers Harvested Crude Drugs from botanical garden.”

This element adds educational value to the programme by connecting garden-based activity with pharmacy learning.

Environmental Conservation Through NSS

Through the NSS Activity at PES College of Pharmacy Phaltan, students gained practical experience in cleanliness, plant care and environmental responsibility

Environmental conservation can begin with small and consistent actions. Cleaning a garden, removing waste, maintaining plants and keeping pathways clean may appear simple, but such activities encourage students to develop environmentally responsible habits.

The NSS programme gave volunteers an opportunity to contribute directly to the cleanliness and maintenance of their own college environment.

Rather than discussing environmental responsibility only theoretically, students were able to put it into practice.

This approach is important because meaningful environmental awareness develops when individuals participate in conservation activities themselves. The programme therefore helped connect the principles of NSS with practical environmental action.

Development of Teamwork and Leadership Skills

Another important outcome of the activity was the development of teamwork.

Garden cleaning requires coordination between participants. Different volunteers can undertake different responsibilities, including removing weeds, cleaning pathways, maintaining plants and collecting waste.

Working together toward a common objective teaches students how individual efforts contribute to a larger result.

Leadership is also developed when students take responsibility for tasks, coordinate with other volunteers and complete activities systematically.

The NSS report highlights teamwork and leadership as important skills developed through the programme.

These skills can be valuable not only during college life but also in professional environments and future community-service programmes.

Positive Response from Participants

The NSS Activity at PES College of Pharmacy Phaltan received active participation from volunteers, reflecting students’ interest in environmental and community-oriented programmes.

The participants expressed satisfaction after completing the Herbal Garden Cleaning Activity.

According to the report, volunteers appreciated the opportunity to contribute to environmental conservation and suggested that similar cleaning programmes should be conducted regularly to maintain the beauty of the garden.

This response indicates that the activity successfully encouraged participants to think beyond a one-day programme.

Regular involvement in such initiatives can create a stronger culture of cleanliness and environmental responsibility across the campus.

NSS and Social Responsibility Among Pharmacy Students

The National Service Scheme provides an important platform through which students can understand the value of serving society.

For pharmacy students, social responsibility is particularly meaningful because their future profession is closely connected with healthcare and public welfare. Activities involving cleanliness, environmental awareness and community participation can complement their academic education.

Through this NSS programme, students were able to contribute their time and effort toward improving the college environment.

The programme also encouraged volunteers to recognize that meaningful social contribution can begin with their immediate surroundings.

Successful Completion of the NSS Activity

The Herbal Garden Cleaning NSS Activity was successfully completed with active involvement from students and faculty members.

The programme improved the cleanliness and appearance of the herbal garden while simultaneously encouraging environmental conservation, teamwork, leadership and social responsibility.

The official report concludes that the activity was successful and expresses an intention to continue organizing similar programmes in the future to foster social responsibility among volunteers.

The programme was coordinated by Prof. Kadam P.K. and Prof. Kale N.G., with Dr. V. T. Deshmukh listed as Principal in the official report.

Conclusion

The NSS Activity at PES College of Pharmacy Phaltan demonstrated how students and faculty members can work together for environmental conservation and campus development.

Conducted on 25 September 2025, the Herbal Garden Cleaning Activity brought together 20 volunteers who participated in removing weeds, cleaning pathways, maintaining plants, collecting waste and supporting the overall maintenance of the garden.

The activity was more than a cleanliness programme. It provided students with an opportunity to develop teamwork, leadership and social responsibility while contributing to a healthier and more pleasant learning environment.

Activities of this kind support the broader objective of NSS by encouraging young people to become responsible and socially aware citizens. By continuing such programmes, Phaltan Education Society’s College of Pharmacy & Research Center, Phaltan can further strengthen student participation in environmental conservation and community-oriented initiatives.

Overall, the NSS Activity at PES College of Pharmacy Phaltan successfully combined environmental conservation, student participation and social responsibility.
